Inuit Energy Sovereignty: A Community-Base Approach

With Janice Grey, Director of Communications and Community Engagement at Tarquti Energy

Tarquti Energy has been in operation since 2020 initiating clean energy projects for the local community. Join us to learn about the challenges and opportunities this Inuit-led company faces for the control of decentralized energy.

Tarquti energy supports the implementation of renewable energy projects in Nunavik communities. They pride themselves in bringing solutions to the energy question that are tailored to the individual needs of each community. They are currently undergoing research projects in wind energy as well as the development of solar power projects in the region. Amongst their partners: engineering firm Hatch and Quebec's state-owned Hydro-Quebec.

Janice is native of the village of Aupaluk in Nunavik (Northern-Quebec). Her goal at Tarquti is "to inform, mobilize and engage Nunavik communities in the region’s energy transition" (MERN, QC). With a focus on community engagement, she was involved in cooperative movements in Nunavik and has held numerous management positions throughout her career. She graduated from post secondary education at Nunavut Sivuniksavut in Inuit History and served as deputy major of Aupaluk from 2015 to 2022.

McGill Sustainability Social

ESG McGill, The Desautels Sustainability Network, and the McGill Energy Association held a joint McGill Sustainability Social on September 20th from 7-10PM EST at Gert's Bar & Café located in the SSMU building on McGill University Campus.

This was a great opportunity to connect with like-minded students, meet the teams, and learn more about what our clubs are planning for this upcoming year.

 

On The Grid: Networking Event

McGill Energy Association presents our very first networking event of 2022!

Featuring several speakers of differing backgrounds, this event provided an opportunity for students to connect with industry professionals and professors working in the energy industry.

Students had the possibility of inquiring about potential Summer 2022 internship positions and learning about different careers.

Incorporating Renewable Energy in Urban Areas

McGill Energy Association presents Incorporating Renewable Energy in Urban Areas!

The event included Ms. Miranda Keating Erickson, Mr. Dan Leeming, and Prof David Wachsmuth.

By 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. This rapid urbanization and changing demography challenge us to rethink how we create resilient and sustainable cities. Topics discussed include city reliance on fossil fuels, urban sprawl, and sustainable initiatives to solve current energy problems.

Interschool Research Symposium: Energy and Sustainability

McGill Energy Association collaborated with McMaster Energy Association and University of Waterloo Energy Network for an Interschool Research Symposium event for McMaster Energy Week!

The event included a researcher from each school that presented their work and answered questions.

Dr. James Cotton, McMaster University, Dr. Ali Seifitokaldani, McGill University and Dr. Mehrdad Pirnia, University of Waterloo, were part of this panel.

Net Zero Action: From Challenge To Opportunity For Accelerated & Sustainable Value Creation

The McGill Energy Association was invited to tune in to MYTILINEOS's virtual summit with some of the largest energy players in the industry. An excellent opportunity for the McGill community to learn more about the future of energy sustainability.

MYTILINEOS organized an online summit focusing exclusively on the Environmental and Social Criteria, which together with the Governance Criteria constitute the ESG indicators for Sustainable Development, with the aim of highlighting important contemporary issues and setting new and higher goals for sustainability. The McGill Community tuned in on YouTube to hear some of the largest players in the energy industry!

The McGill Energy Association was thrilled to host McGill’s own, professor Christopher Ragan, professor Dror Etzion, and Martha Hall Findlay - our newest special speaker, who discussed the role of business and government in facilitating the transition towards clean forms of energy. This event was perfect for students from all faculties who are interested in sustainable energy and the role of governments and businesses in the green transition.

Brookfield Renewable and the Energy Transition

People talked to Geoff Wright, VP Market Research, of Brookfield Renewable, moderated by the VP of Events of the McGill Energy Association Angel Giordano.

Brookfield Renewable is one of the world's largest investors in renewable power, with 18,100 megawatts of generating capacity and facilities located in North and South America, Europe, India and China. The company is diversified across multiple renewable technologies including hydro, wind, utility-scale and distributed solar and storage. Geoff Wright, Vice President of Market Research at Brookfield Renewable, walked us through how the business is evolving since he last spoke with the group in 2016 and how Brookfield Renewable is positioning itself as the world looks to decarbonize.

GHGSat: Global Emission Monitoring

"People came to hear from the President of GHGSat. Inc speak about their mission to become the global reference for remote sensing of GHG and AQG emissions from industrial sites, using satellite technology.

In June 2016, GHGSat Inc. launched the world's first satellite capable of measuring GHG emissions from any industrial facility in the world.

The Business of Renewable Energy

“Are you interested in how renewable energy projects are found and funded? Wonder how an engineering team is selected? Or if you want to know more about the future prospects of renewable energy and new business opportunities it may create” This event answered all the questions. The panel discussed to learn more about the business of renewable energy and how students and recent graduates can get involved in the highly-impactful industry.

The panel composed of professionals from companies such as Enercon, CanMET Energy, and was an opportunity to get an introduction to the growing business of renewable energy and to get your questions personally answered!

Pierre-Laurent Macridis

Pierre is currently an associate at Fondaction CSN, a Montreal based private equity firm which has invested in and setup companies and funds like: Inlandsis (a carbon project financing fund), Eolectric capital (a renewable energy investment fund), CoPower (a public greenbond provider) and Energere (One of Canada’s leading & largest energy efficiency service providers)
Pierre completed both his undergrad (
B.com, 2015) and master’s degree (M.Sc, 2018) at McGill University. He received his master’s degree in Renewable Resources and Natural Resources Sciences in 2018 (Thesis: Financial Viability of Microalgal Biodiesel Production). He also received his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 2015 from the Desautels Faculty of Management. During his time at McGill, Pierre was an executive with the McGill Energy Association for 5 years.

We walked as a group to Hydro-Quebec Headquarters (75, boulevard René-Lévesque Ouest) for the tour (which begins at 10:00am)

People joined the MEA as we went on a tour exploring Hydro-Quebec’s downtown headquarters. Learnt the ins and outs of hydroelectricity and the history of one of North America’s leading energy companies.

This was a *free* event that is an amazing way to check out Hydro-Quebec and the MEA.

Guest Speaker: Deputy Minister of Alberta Energy, Coleen Volk

This covered a wide range of topics regarding the energy industry in Alberta, such as the the role of the Alberta Ministry of Energy and the role of the Deputy Ministry.

Careers with Alberta Energy were also discussed, followed by Q&A, making this event a valuable opportunity for those interested in working in the energy sector.

Fall 2017 Members Meeting-McGill Energy Association

The meeting was an opportunity for MEA members to meet and get to know the 2017-2018 MEA Executive Team, ask questions about the club, and learn more about past and future MEA events.

At 12:30PM, MEA Co-President John Butler gave a short presentation about his work as a United States Department of State Advisor/Summer Fellow at the U.S. Mission to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France on the topics of Energy, Natural Resource-based Development, and Regional Development.

Engineers-in-Action Speaker Series:

Sustainability in Engineering with Antonino Lagana

The McGill Energy Association (MEA), Sustainability in Engineering at McGill (SEAM), and the Engineering Career Centre (ECC) were proud to welcome guest speaker Mr. Antonino Lagana, Principal Engineer at Stantec. Mr. Lagana gave an in-depth talk on geothermal heating and cooling methods, as well as other energy conservation measures to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

As a former aeronautical engineer, Mr. Lagana has worked for companies such as Pratt & Whitney and CAE. He co-founded Ecovision in 2002 –a consulting company that specializes in the development of green engineering strategies for cost-effective, innovative energy solutions for new and existing buildings. In 2015, he began working for Stantec where he currently focuses on renewable energy and the energy performance of buildings.

Innovation Seminar Series, Part I: Environmental Innovation

BioFuelNet Canada

is a network that unites Canadian researchers whose objectives are to accelerate the development of advanced biofuels, while focusing on non-food biomass as biofuel feedstocks. With an office in the Quartier de l'Innovation, there are a number of opportunities for McGill students to take part in their activities. If you have an interest in biofuels, this seminar is a great way to learn more about the industry and network with professionals.

There were two McGill professors presenting, Dr. Don Smith (CEO and Scientific Director at BiofuelNet, and James McGill Professor) and Dr. Joann Whalen (William Dawson Scholar and McGill Professor) on BiofuelNet and their research. Their graduate student, Pierre-Laurent Macridis presented on his research an how it fits in the bigger objectives of BiofuelNet.

Mark Gallagher, Senior Developer - Renewable Energy

Mr. Gallagher has over 15 years of experience in the renewable energy industry in both Ireland and North America. His projects have ranged from single wind turbine applications to 300MW sites. His current responsibilities include delivering several hundred MWs of existing Ontario projects and identifying and developing greenfield sites across Canada.

He gave a lecture sharing his valuable insight on the life of a professional in the renewable energy industry and highlight the future trends that are predicted for renewable energy systems.
